Luxembourg is to set up a national fund for the restoration of historic medieval castles and manors.
The plan to provide the public a monthly subsidy of 1.1 million euros ($1.45 million) has won the backing of MEPs for consideration by the European Parliament’s Culture, Media and Sport (CAMSC) committee, which is considering the European Parliament’s 2015-2020 budget.
The fund was launched at the start of the annual assembly in the Danish capital Copenhagen last week and aims to bring medieval castles back to their original grandeur. However, experts say the funding system is more difficult than it is intended to be.
“It is a pretty ambitious project – not just the expenditure but the timeframe of what it entails and the level of cooperation at various levels,” said Margot van Maaren, a professor of medieval history at the University of Kent.
“It is very much a first step, and in the longer term I can see more things being done on this side of the Atlantic that are better aimed at restoring the medieval environment.”
CAMSC, a pan-European parliamentary committee comprised of national representatives from member states, has been considering the EU’s spending plans and financial commitments between 2015 and 2020, which currently stand at 2.23 billion euros.
Under the current budget plan, a total of 27 different projects, ranging from the restoration of medieval castles to modern tourist attractions, have been under consideration.
The aim is “one grand castle at a time”, a description proposed by the Luxembourg ministry of industry and tourism in a written justification for the funds.
