(CBS) — It’s the dance of the future: a healthy, happy body that can move more naturally than ever before. And for years, doctors have known you shouldn’t dance the “chimney” in a party to lift your energy and make you last through a workout.

A group of researchers claims belly dancing can damage your back muscles, and it may cause more back pain than a run a mile.

Belly dancing poses a double blow to the elderly, the researchers say, because it’s very likely to cause more back pain than regular exercise.

The research by four experts in the U.S. on the possible effects of belly dance on back pain concludes that if you’re a pregnant woman, you should watch all movements of her stomach as they move up and down, and that you should refrain from belly dancing after the first trimester.

You can also be concerned that belly dancing causes a flareup of menstrual pain or menstrual cramps, and that it also makes it more likely your legs will get caught on moving objects at the top of steps.

But these effects can’t be predicted from watching a dance video.

The back pain the research says it causes is mild, and in its most serious form, can lead to paralysis, according to researchers from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and Stanford University.

“We don’t understand how this could possibly happen when the muscles are so carefully tuned. But it does happen. And it can happen on many different joints,” said Dr. Stephen Hecht and his colleagues.

It can also lead to fractures of bones, which in extreme cases can cause a person’s spine to shift outwards in a way that causes back problems, the researchers warned.

This type of damage, called an injury injury and joint trauma, can occur because of exercise, and should be treated by doctors with an MRI, which is the standard for testing the strength of spine and joint muscles.

They add that other experts say even low-intensity exercise can damage joints because they strengthen them, causing them to be less flexible, or more likely to wear out. But in this case, the study is looking at the more serious and often-occurring end of the spectrum of back problems.
