If you’re an artist whose most famous song is “What’s up, Momma,” you owe that to Yassmin Abdel-Magied, a.k.a. Mary Lambert.

The 19-year-old was a rising star with a YouTube channel full of amateur clips. But by November of last year, she had signed to Top Dawg Entertainment. She recorded “Love is a Battlefield (I Need You),” “What’s up, Momma,” and “If You’re Looking for Love” that year. She was featured on two Billboard chart hits (“We Gotta Get Out (In The Streets)” and “Say Your Prayer,” a song about the terrorist attacks in Boston that killed three and injured 264.

“You know, you put out albums and people love ’em and all that s—,’ ” Abdel-Magied told The Washington Post last month. Her song “Say Your Prayer” was played during the Super Bowl, and the commercial ended with the words, “You got that Momma.”

But what happened next was a surprise. When Abdel-Magied returned to New York City late one night last November, she was shot in the wrist and chest by a gunman who was not yet on the radar. She was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where she had a blood transfusion.

“You know, I just don’t even give a f— about what people are saying,” Abdel-Magied told the Post. “I just want one thing, one life to be spared, and that’s my life.”

She spent nine months recovering from her wounds at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center and got released. Today, Abdel-Magied lives in New Orleans with two of her relatives and plans to visit her mother in Canada every December. But she doesn’t forget her attackers.

A group of them had traveled to New York in November to protest her arrest. They showed up at one of her stops, and Abdel-Magied had to chase her into the lobby of the hotel they were staying in.

“I did what a person of God must do: I went with the people that needed me,” Abdel-Magied told the Post. “I got shot for making a statement.”

“I don’t know about you,” Abdel-Magied told another man, “but I know that what I did was right.”
