And then there was the question: How did the Maple Leafs turn a $5.1 million contract into a $5 million signing bonus?

So how did their salary cap figure get so much higher when the player they were acquiring, Joffrey Lupul, made $6 million per season and was the top goaltender on the team?

It’s a long way to get to $5 million but if you’ve been paying attention to the numbers in any of the four major NHL conferences, there’s a reason they’re all increasing every season.

It helps that the Toronto Maple Leafs are one of the top scoring teams in the league but that’s not all the story.

Since 2010-11, the Maple Leafs have been one of only five teams in the NHL to have played two games or more against every team’s best team.

The other three teams are the Rangers, Canadiens and Panthers but that doesn’t even include games against teams in the Pacific Division.

So how did the Leafs score four games against every team’s most effective division winner?

It has to do with the way the salary cap is structured.

The salary cap for this year is $73 million. That’s down $3 million from last summer but it remains the same as the total NHL revenues at $2.1 billion.

So how did the Maple Leafs make up for the money they got from the Edmonton Oilers for Tyler Seguin, the $12.5 million they received for Tyler Bozak and $25.7 million they received for Sami Vatanen?

Simple. The Maple Leafs got that money.

And they didn’t even have to do that.

The Toronto Maple Leafs were only able to do that because the Oilers signed the same players that the Leafs are spending their money on at the expense of some young players, players who have no future.
