Well, you just blow it off. Flappers are more of a lifestyle than a fashion statement, though, which is what makes them fun to watch.

The latest season is a prime example of what it means to wear flapper without being a slave to your cut and dye – because of designer Rachel Morrison, and because of her signature wigs (her first collection, “Miss Flappers’ World”, is currently running) in a time where it’s more mainstream and not as restricted by gender as when it was all about the boob jobs.

The story goes: Ms Morrison, a 28-year-old native of Perth, began her flapper career at the age of 21, first as an unlicensed cosmetologist in Sydney. Her parents were supportive, while her dad – who is the chief executive officer of a retail technology firm in the UK – said: “I’m not an expert on flappers, but I find them to be very attractive young women who are very much into their style.”

She worked briefly as a model before starting her freelance modelling career.

“My father wasn’t happy, because he felt it was too trendy at the time,” she told The Huffington Post Australia in an interview back in May, when she was just starting out. “I wanted to be a flapper.”

But at the time, it didn’t seem like she was.

“I worked for a large department store in Sydney, and I had some pretty glamorous friends,” she recalls about that time.

“I’d make them drink tequila shots, and I would have them put on a big smile. But the fact is, I’d never really had any girlfriends. I had no money – I was just a stripper with no money.”

But it didn’t take much to change her mind.

“When I found the fashion industry to be quite challenging, my parents were actually quite supportive, and I was starting to think, ‘I like fashion, I just don’t want to be doing that stuff anymore’,” she says.

“I’d do it, but I’d give it 10 times the effort and I’d make them drink a lot – it took me the longest to actually really realise I can be successful. I think in the end, I just liked the fact I could do it, I liked the freedom that came back with it.”
