Was the flapper a feminist? – Black Flapper Dress With Sleeves
I am an African-American flapper. There would have been no flapper had there not been black women flappers, so I’m not going to talk about it. I think women are always at fault for everything women do, and we always find out what women do — they’re always at fault.
You have this perception that there’s something different about male flappers.
I’m a man who does not want to talk about anything because what I’m doing is very different. I’m the only woman flapper, and I have spent 30 years in this industry. One, I’ve made my living doing what I love. And two, because I’m on the cover of magazines, women are going to be interested in what I’m doing and they’re going to be talking. So I don’t want to be part of that conversation because I’ve got better things to do with my time.
Would you still be on the cover of magazines, if it wasn’t for the flamboyant, attention-seeking lifestyle of being white?

How often do the media portray you as a caricature or an anomaly?
I’ve probably had the worst week — the worst week of my life — in the last six years where people will come up to me and say, “I like the way you look.” I’ve got a lot of people come up to me and say it like that, and I feel bad about that. I don’t want to be judged by my appearance.
But I guess the way I get judged — I’m not being judged by what I’m doing or what I look like. All I’m being judged by is who I am. My personal life — I’m not very happy with the way it is.
And you’re not particularly happy with how it is at home?
Right. And then I got a letter today from a man who works for a women’s magazine and they said, “You’re the best white flapper we
