The flapper coat of the 1890s was one of the first things that I noticed. People wore flapper coats with a top hat, like a kilt. When the top hat was removed they wore this kind of coat with a white shirt and black trousers. The front of the coat had a blue bow at the top like the ones in old photographs. The front and back had a red bow at the bottom of the coat and a ribbon.

What makes this a kilt?

It had a front and back skirt, but the bottom skirt had a red bow made of a ribbon like the ones that were done in the old days and used in the 1890s coat. I don’t know if they were kilt or other. I guess the color is different from the coat. The coat of the 1890s is a blue kilt, but I haven’t seen anything with an orange bow.

What about ladies with their hats. Was this a traditional dress?

This was the old-time woman’s dress. She was very fashionable, because she wore a hat that covered her face. I don’t remember any ladies in that type of top hat with a white shirt and black trousers. I don’t think you would really wear a white shirt with black trousers just to look classy like that. I don’t think it was a traditional women’s dress.

What did ladies wear to the ball?

These ladies were dressed in very glamorous dresses, especially the 1930s. They were very elegant and the dress was very tight. A lot of women had the waist pinned up to make it look more elaborate and I guess you’d try to get away from the neckline. These dresses were made of linen and silk and very heavy, like very heavy and tight. They would not loosen easily from the waist, so it was a tight dress but you didn’t have to worry about it.

Did you know a lot about the ball dresses?

I was a very small part-timer, but I went to the ball dress show on the day they were opening. There was a dress that I liked when I was about seventeen years old in those days — the old dress, that was made to sit up a little bit and you’d put a ribbon, a bow, or a lace or a flower or a leaf of some kind under it for a flower pattern or something. And these dresses were just a little bit too heavy for those days. These were the days of the tight dresses
