“There’s only one answer to the question: they were black,” he said, laughing.

Frazier, an expert on the period, said he believes the woman’s foot has been recovered, possibly at the scene. But what about the black or white shoe she found?

“I don’t think they could have been the same shoe because they would be wearing different shoes,” Frazier said, adding there may have been other people in the pair as well. “It’s very hard to tell,” he said “there was a whole lot more going on down at the beach.”

One of the most intriguing things that fascinates Frazier is that if the woman had been an ordinary person, the white sandals would have been a clear sign that no one had been near her foot, as they would have been covered with sand by the time the coroner began to investigate. Instead, as with the woman’s foot, the shoes had a different type of protection that made it hard to tell who actually was at her foot.

“I don’t want to say that the sandals alone prove that one of two things occurred,” Frazier said. “I think both pieces of evidence point to that someone was present with her, but the sandals may or may not have been there because the shoe covers the foot.”

The discovery of the woman’s shoe “sounds to me a very, very compelling case, especially in that case where she was completely naked,” Frazier said. She’s a “very lucky person.” She could still be alive and alive people and have their shoes,” he said.

He pointed out, “I’m going to do my best in the future to find out what she was wearing.”

The unidentified woman is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing at 10 a.m. on Tuesday in Santa Barbara County Superior Court.
