It comes down to personal style. You are the one setting the price and what you do is not important. People come in the street and take the same approach with guitar. The reason we sell at the current price is that you really should be able to play the instrument.

There is a lot of misunderstanding about fair prices. One thing I like to remember when talking about guitar pricing is that it was not a fair price when we started to sell music lessons in 2008. It was $300 for a three-hour lesson. It is $1,200 to start over at the higher price you are seeing today on the guitar lessons. There is a difference.

On the first day we had 300 people come in. Now we have over 900. It also goes by the book. If you have a three-hour lesson that you could sell for $200, your sales would be $300. It seems like you are pricing the lesson too high, but if you are paying what you can get a lesson for, what do you get with that?

Let’s say you have a lesson plan for 10 hours, $500, $1,500. You then go to start your music career but there is this little problem; the person doesn’t know how to play. If you can’t teach a little more by playing than by talking and giving information, you are not going to be able to go into music industry, radio or any other business.

If you can play the instrument and you have a plan on how to become good at it, you are going to make more money doing it than talking.

What do you advise people who want to learn guitar to do?

I tell them to take the money they would have spent on their car that day and put it in the account for the lessons you want to purchase. Then they only have 30 days to pay it off. When you buy a new car with a $20,000 down payment, it is going to take you 10 years to pay the car off, but at the end of the 10 years you are not going to want the car when you get it. You want to get it with a $1,000 down payment.

This means you will not always be able to afford the lessons you are asking for, but you should have a good plan so that they are worth it.
