The order in which you learn guitar is very important. First learn to play the root and the 7th of every note. Do this for a few years, and then move on (or skip it). Your progress will be smoother when you learn the whole scale.

Do you play the root of every chord?

Yes, I do play the root of every chord I learn! I try to play chords without adding chords to them.

Do you study music theory?

Absolutely! But, I do have a limited number of books that I always have on my computer. I do read the music theory books for all songs that I learn… It’s more important than what I read. I will read all the books.

How long does it take to learn guitar?

I think it starts quickly and doesn’t really slow down after a while.

If you had your choice, would you learn in 2-4 weeks or 12 weeks?

I would only learn in a few days. I’ll teach in any order and start out slowly.

After your first lesson, how often will you practice?

Practice once a week for 3-4 weeks. I do it to prepare myself. After a while it becomes second nature.

What is the most difficult technique you have to learn?

Stroke motion. If you just play the same sound, your rhythm is going to look the same. You can’t change chords until you know how to change chord. Then I teach you something called “Mute” style. My theory is that you start from scratch on this and you can’t learn much more.

Who should start learning guitar?

If someone is already learning blues, then it’s a no-brainer that blues should start here. If you have a great jazz player with 5-string bass, then Jazz can be learned in a very similar way, and also by playing jazz tunes with your bass.

Will teaching be as difficult as other types?

Absolutely! Teachers and parents tell us that every piece of music that we teach is different and there is an entirely different approach.

What’s the most challenging part of learning guitar?

The first lesson and having a ton of material to memorize. Once I have done that, I think it is about getting comfortable and then starting to mix things up.
