The Department of Justice, in an effort to address federal and state corruption, is launching a coordinated effort of federal and state authorities to prosecute corporate malfeasance across the industry.
The Office of the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) will join the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) as federal partners in an initiative to combat corruption and narcotics trafficking in Afghanistan.
“Corporate behavior and bribery in Afghanistan are driving illegal sales of narcotics by corrupt Afghan government officials,” said Special Inspector General Michael E. Horowitz, a career civil servant who leads the multi-agency office. “I’m confident we can harness our expertise across all agencies to solve this issue, and to put a stop to drug production and trafficking in the region.”
In the past year, SIGAR has focused its efforts on “corporate corruption in Afghanistan,” as well as how foreign governments provide assistance, influence and protection to drug traffickers and corrupt officials. The organization’s investigations include efforts aimed at preventing the illegal procurement of U.S. aid and the illegal sale of U.S. aid, according to the Department of State.
The United Nations (UN) has stated that corruption is a central part of the conflict in Afghanistan.
“Corrupt individuals are corrupt because they’re corrupt — and that is a crime, in and of itself,” said Horowitz. “Corrupt individuals corrupt the government and the government corrupts corrupt individuals with the money made from corruption. Corruption will not end until there is justice as well as punishment for those who commit it.”
