What is the hardest instrument to play? – Read Sheet Music Online
If you were to pick a genre as hard (and often) as your own own music, which would be your first choice?
The hardest thing I’ve ever played was the guitar, my dad took me to a few shows and I played on one of them by myself. And I could hear the guitar, I could hear the strings, I could hear that I had some sort of rhythm with it. And it really gave me the courage to learn this whole new genre of playing with these new instruments. I can’t even put it in words right now, but the instrument really makes a difference for me in terms of what I am able to learn from it, whether it’s rhythm or harmony or anything.
What is the hardest instrument to play in your own music?
The most difficult thing I’ve ever done was just sing the lyrics for “I’ll Fly Away,” by the Killers. I would never say no but the lyrics would get really difficult. And I couldn’t find him in the studio. I had a bass player that I played with named Steve Harris who is still there. We’ve been together for more than 40 years, we’re still a real good rhythm team, even though we didn’t play together on the record [laughs].

The songs for “White” are so powerful, or the one about “Blue Jeans,” the one about feeling like the other person is an alien for a minute, the one about getting back to your childhood or something. But every time I get to do something like that, it’s a moment that really makes me feel like I’m not doing anything else, I’m doing the best I can. And that’s kind of the most important part.
What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever had to do in the recording process?
I think probably the most difficult thing I’ve ever had to do in the recording process was “White.” Just when I was doing it, I knew it was going to be bad, and it was
