When he’s not rapping, he’s sitting in a room with a bunch of different writers and producers and trying to bring out his best work.
On his new album, “The Black Pussy,” the album starts out a bit weird but then just gets bigger and bigger and bigger, and eventually, you kind of get fed up and want to sing along. We talk to the guy about making a song like that and what he hopes to achieve with it.
What was it like working with Rick Ross?
He’s a really nice dude. He’s a friend-you-don’t-have-to-speak-to-me-like-a-bitch. I met him on stage. I just stood at his shoulders and he’s like, “Yo man,” and gave me a hug. I can still see him in my brain, and it’s something I wouldn’t have thought of. He just gets the song and he wrote it and he can rhyme.
What does he want from you and the album?
He’s probably one of some of, like, a million people. He’s in some big clubs. He’s famous and his songs are so good, but they’re not on iTunes, they don’t get the love you get on Jay-Z or Nas or somebody. They’re not as big. He’s a big-time artist who doesn’t really need to be on a radio that much, but he needs to be on TV. That’s why he’s on this record. He has an image to keep his name going, and he has a voice and he can be as good as people say he can be and still be in the underground but still be mainstream.
Where is your new record going to live? Is the song for Christmas?
For Christmas, I just want to get it on radio and see how big people are. It’ll probably get on like that [laughs]. This is the album, but I’m not going to get into the details.
Is it the first time you’ve done a record that was all of your own, and how did the album come together?
