If hip-hop’s going to do well, it has to be originality on a different level.

What the fuck is “originality” you ask? That’s just an aesthetic thing. It’s about being able to use rhyme patterns that are not common to the music. The fact is hip-hop, like any subculture, is about creativity and a sense of uniqueness. Everyone has an opinion on what is cool and what is not. I personally don’t think it’s good for anybody to be a rap maven or be a rapper just because they got three little verses and you’re not famous enough to make it in. That’s not how it’s done. I’m a rapper first off, that’s how I make my living. But I can’t say “this is what hip-hop is”. I’m not going to put out a track just outta nowhere. They gotta try to write it and prove it to me.

How do you feel about the death of The Notorious B.I.G.?

He was amazing. He was the best rapper that ever lived. To be able to put that kind of weight behind his name like that … not to mention the way he was perceived as a black kid … he was a lot of things. He’s one of the best hip-hop minds that ever lived. He’s still alive. It’s great to know him but I’m not going to get into that kind of thing.

What does it mean to be the first Black rapper to ever do number one in the charts?

It means that we are really special, the kind of success it represents. My mother is here and we’re here playing in Detroit. It’s just a huge honor.

Is it the kind of success that will bring more attention and recognition to your music?

Nah. I haven’t heard a lot of that kind of stuff. I don’t know. We’re just here, playing like everyone else … I don’t really have any thoughts on what anyone else is doing. It does bring attention to you though. It’s amazing. We’ve got a bit of notoriety now but I don’t really want to be known as “that Black boy from Detroit.” It’s enough already
