“Well, there’s always a bar,” he says. “And a lot of bars are good. So we tried to make something that was good at both—at the level it should live, at the level it should flow.”

It’s an intriguing dichotomy; on one hand, a new song doesn’t always need to be a classic, and a good song can often be a lot like an old song. At the same time, rap can be more or less genre-neutral, a spectrum that has its own unique strengths and weaknesses. “I think we’re kind of a hybrid between genres because we’re all over the place.” He says. “I don’t know, man. This has led to a number of collaborations with rap’s most popular figures, including Kanye West, A$AP Rocky, Kendrick Lamar, Nicki Minaj, and Future. This week, Kanye West and Future performed “Ultralight Beam” and “Monster,” two songs that are heavily influenced by each other, at Lollapalooza, where they were joined by Future’s label partner (and Future’s father) Sean “Diddy” Combs.

When it comes to a guest appearance on a project by a guest rapper, West would be a natural choice, but the producer who is most well-versed in the game, Diddy, is very much outgunned by West for the role. The rapper also is in demand as a guest star, and West has been trying to convince producer Jimmy Iovine, who created hit songs like Jay Z’s “Girlfriend,” to do a collaboration with him on something big.

Still, while there is certainly a chance that West’s work can go mainstream, this seems like a very specific type of mainstream. It’s not like he is trying to sell his albums for $5 a pop or something, so it’s unclear if this work fits into mainstream culture or not. He does have a point in terms of keeping it underground—the only reason the work is still relevant is because he is creating it, and so many are still not aware of its existence.

“We try not to focus on, you know, what’s going on right now, what’s going on right now for the artist to sell. That’s not really us,” says West. “We try to give the artists freedom to be who they want to be and for me to not try to
