You could have become something more, if you would have just said to yourself ‘I’m a racist’, and this time it would be an adult one, a problem in itself if it’s even possible to live with someone that way.

No, because, not only can you never learn to live with racism, but you might die from it if you did.

What are you going to do (other than live)?

I had to give up my career in academia (and the whole idea of a career), because I am now terrified of it.

I can’t even begin imagine having to come up with all the things you’d have to do to ‘discover’ racism within yourself, that we could all learn to appreciate.

Even if it’s in fiction, I don’t think I would love it too much.

So what are you going to do?

If, in this time, I come across the book (and it is going to be interesting), do what you can to share things about racism (and the effects of racism) with everyone you know, and hope in that process you can learn something that maybe I (the one who’s scared about it) didn’t see coming for myself.

Because, as much as it sucks to admit it, I’m going to die this way.
