The basic way to understand pitch is that it’s the difference between a perfect pitch (A=440 Hz) (like this) and an octave (“one half the note of the octave” or 0.010 Hz, which is the same as one octave “quarter” of a perfect pitch).

It’s important to take this distinction out of the context of classical musical notation, but it can be useful when playing along to hear or listen to the difference.

The more often you play along to music, the more you will learn to recognize the difference and when to apply it.

There are quite a few different kinds of pitch in music such as in the key of B flat major and in the key of A. As I mentioned earlier, the difference between a great trumpet sound and a weak trumpet sound (beware of high-pitched flugelhorn) is the amount of tension between the two pitches.

In the lower key of B flat major, the note of A is always a perfect pitch whereas in the key of A, the note of A is two octaves higher.

What about the music of Chopin?

This was my big disappointment when studying the music of Chopin. While he always used his great trumpet voice to show a great musical technique on the instrument, his trumpet voice was not used for melody.

And so with all the different kinds of tone in music, one would expect that he would be all about harmony, but instead he used this tone to represent harmony.

The difference between A sharp and B flat? A is two octaves higher. So for a perfect pitch (440 Hz) the note of A is one octave higher.

But what if you hear a voice that would make perfect sense for one pitch, but not for another?

Imagine the music of Chopin where the voice is not used for harmonic notes, but in a different way to show his genius. When you hear a great Chopin trumpet voice for a perfect pitch (440 Hz), you already noticed that it is very different in style from a weak voice.

In some of his works of piano, Chopin would just add a minor third over a major third.

The difference is that the perfect pitch of his voice is a very strong tone that gives a very pleasing sound.
