This is why I started this blog – to share some tips on getting started, getting better – and the rewards of learning and improving your ukulele skills.

The first thing you need to get good at is picking ukulele patterns.

This may seem obvious to most new ukulele players, because they all learn to listen, and have a good ear.

But you don’t have to listen! I believe some people forget this point almost as quickly as they learn to play.

You have to pick a pattern – a simple pattern – to learn the ukulele.

And then learn that pattern. Once you’ve learned it, your practice will be faster, your tone will get better, and you’ll be able to play a wider range of ukulele patterns.

You’ve got to work out patterns, and learn themin the slow and slow, and in the fast – but the important thing is to pick a ‘pattern’ that feels comfortable and familiar before you learn to play a full ukulele tune.

I always get a lot of people asking, for example, “How do I learn an ukulele pattern if I can’t play them?”

The answer is to start doing them, slowly, in the correct order.

For example in my lesson I’ll work on picking a pattern for a simple melody – and eventually learn how to play it. Once you have learned to play it, you can play it in any order and it will be easier to memorise each step.

If you’re a beginner, though, there’s no guarantee that you’ll get good at all these simple patterns quickly. In fact, there’s a very good chance that you won’t even learn to pick up an ukulele until you try playing the real thing for the first time!

The trick is to focus on learning what you are good at. Once you’re good at picking patterns, and you’re trying to improve on picking patterns, you’re going to be good at picking them too.

If it’s the easier part – picking a melody tune, then don’t be scared – it will become a lot easier with practice, as your pattern knowledge will grow. There’s no rush, it’s never too early, and the more you play your tunes the louder you will be able to sing.

What is important is to always start to pick patterns and learn them as
