How much should a decent ukulele cost? – Best Way To Learn To Play The Ukulele Amanda

This is a topic that I often get asked about. As a student of classical guitar, ukulele can be very expensive. I mean it to be expensive, but the real answer is not so much what you are going to pay for an ukulele as it is how much you are going to spend. As an example, if my father (a musician himself) had a decent ukulele that cost around $5,000, he probably wouldn’t have bought it as part of an investment like many players do. He would have bought it as part of a larger collection of guitars that were all in remarkably similar condition, but which are all of a piece. To him, buying a $5,000 ukulele is not going to be very exciting because he just got the cheapest, most popular ukulele of them all. (He doesn’t need some new kid on the block, since there are plenty available on the market who sell for at least $40k.) But if we are talking about a decent ukulele costing over $50,000, even this is going to be exciting. You have $50,000 of investment opportunity that you can leverage to acquire some much more interesting instruments and guitars. And by the time you have gotten to this point it is even more exciting to realize that you have also bought something that could be even more valuable, even if less used. A good example of this is the Gibson ES-330. This is an electric slide guitar that had been played by many top jazz musicians, but had recently acquired some legendary status as it was one of the guitar that brought Martin Denny into prominence. (If you’re interested you can read some of his favorite records, but if you’d rather not I suggest a visit to the Internet Archive and read the liner notes to the first album he recorded with the ES-330 in the late 70’s.) A good guitar builder would make this guitar a $50,000 investment because it would be a highly sought after piece, at least by the most discriminating standards among the people who could afford to buy one. But the only reason a guitarist would not be inclined to buy a very nice ES-330 is that he (or she) would not want to spend $50,000. The $50,000 guitar that cost about $5,000 would have been much more exciting to the player since all he or she has to go on is a single guitar that he or she does not have to worry about
