The first time I saw this film I wasn’t sure what to make of it. I’d recently seen the same movie for the first time and thought it was funny. I was also watching “The Truman Show” and thought the movie looked great. But this movie wasn’t funny to me, because I didn’t know what to make of this film until we watched it!
It was one of the first films I saw with the camera on the street. I had heard there were still great documentary films made on the ground. I was intrigued at the idea of making a street documentary about this great project because I thought it would tell a lot about life on the streets that wasn’t being told, or even remembered, even though there are still great stories to tell. I knew I had to make this film in one day or I would never finish! I made it in one day, on a hot summer day, with my camera on the corner of a park. I have to admit though, one of my favorite things about making this film was learning about what other people thought, and then watching people react, as an audience member. I remember hearing the response to a question I asked: “Did the project change your life?” This film changed my life! But more importantly, I was able to see how people feel about this project, and how these stories were shared and shared together. This film changed not only my life, but so many others!
What I want my viewers to take away from this film… this film is for you. It has a story as a beginning, then a climax that changes how we see and understand life on the streets.
What will help me make this film?
I’ll need a lens because I can’t be sure if the subject is going to be in front of me or behind me. I’m also using film because it’s much easier to take photos of the people I’m documenting.
What’s the process to making a street documentary film?
To get the right people to interview, the cameras need to be at one location so I can point cameras at any persons being interviewed. And because they are already living and working on the street there cannot be a great deal of light, which is key to making great video. For the most part, I do everything by ear,
