It’s hard to imagine, especially for the uninitiated, what hip hop is. There’s no formal genre, no formal structure to explain why hip hop is so popular, and there’s really nothing to even pin down with. However, there’s a lot of different genres that exist, and I believe that any of these genres are not exclusive. All of these genres share this common thread of trying to express life through music and music lyrics. Whether it’s rap, or R&B, or hip hop, there’s a point at which the entire idea of the particular genre of that particular artist is lost. These are just three of the many types of hip hop.
Where could it all begin?
A lot of this is rooted in the fact that hip hop is a movement in itself, and therefore it’s a movement of its own. With some of the larger genres, including hip hop, there are always individuals who try to make the genre “their” style and then they do it better than anybody else. I won’t name any names, but I’m telling you right now that in the past decade or so, there’s been a resurgence of hip hop lyrics and its lyrical content that’s a bit unique. When I spoke with the person that I interviewed about this, I brought up how there was a lot of talk about R&B lyrics, and she brought up the fact that she used to write for hip hop, or at least a lot of hip hop, and that the lyrics she writes for hip hop are different from what goes on in any other genre. She said, “I’m not a fan of the R&B writing. It’s too harsh and it just comes off cold. It’s not a word; it’s a sentence. There’s nothing to it.” So there’s a little bit of that in rap, though it’s not the same amount.
And that’s the point with the lyrics. To me, that’s the difference between rap and more traditional genres of the world. Rap lyrics don’t even have a place in the general realm that a song about the weather would have in the middle of a country or something like that. This is why I think hip hop is so different than the music that’s been created for traditional hip hop. As we move forward and hear more rappers using wordplay and metaphors and all the things that are usually associated with hip hop as if it’s just hip hop, we’re going to see a lot of different music being
