Are you a dancer? Where do you dance? What do you do there and not dancing at home?”

“Yes, yes, of course I do dance,” I replied, forgetting what she had asked.

She was right. So were I.

I’m sure some of you who do dancing know all about the choreographies, the music and the dance, and how to do ‘something’ when you do it, or how to dance (to a point) when you do it, not being dancing but something else.

Mostly, though, I had a very clear reason why I did NOT dance at home when I danced, and that was because to dance on your own, a little dancing at home, is a whole other ballgame.

You do not become a “dancer” by walking into a room and starting ‘dancing’. What you do become is a choreographer or performer.

Just as, at a party, you need a little dance, and a little music, in which to ‘play’ (rather than ‘sing’), you need a little choreography, and a little music too.

Just as you do not become a “dancer” by going around the room in a flash (the “dancer”), you cannot be a “dancer” by just dancing.

You need to have a few songs in order to ‘make’ the experience of dancing at home feel good.

It is not enough to know when the right tone, the right song, the right rhythm or the right movements would be to just dance, and then do the dance.

One of the reasons I do NOT dance at home, when I dance there. (See, that is my favorite part of the job!)

“In the long run, you can’t get through a big day without some kind of rehearsal,” I told her.

She took notice. “Can I practice for a while?” she said.

I was taken aback for a moment, and then said: “I don’t think you should spend a lot of time watching what they do.”

As a matter of fact, I don’t think you should spend a lot of time watching what anyone does!

If you want to dance at home, just let the choreographer or the music-maker do the choreography first.

You are a dancer. You learn all kinds of things through practice.
