The United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) is the primary regulatory authority for most chemical substances, but the agency may not be able to control every substance it regulates. There are three types of chemical that the agency regulates:
Each of these chemical substances has a specific regulatory history that sets it apart. Because of its different origins, each type of chemical may have different effects.
Active chemicals typically are found in things that can be used in everyday life: air, water, sand, food, paints, and water filters. These chemicals generally do what they are intended to do: get rid of pollutants, such as dirt or dust, from the environment.
Removing chemicals comes from chemicals that are removed from objects, such as cleaning materials, clothing, and paints. Some remove chemicals from certain materials that should be kept away from children or pets. Other substances are not meant to be put in places kids can get to such as the food we eat and the water we drink.
