“I know there will always be a place for paint on anything, but this will be a temporary stop and then we’ll see what works for her,” said Bob, who hopes she’ll attend school in the summer.
He’s determined to stay involved as long as possible. If he’s right, he’ll be one of those people who tries to give people hope.
“It seems like a lot of people in California are not in touch with reality, and I think the people who have the most access to things are people who have money,” he said.
And it shows.
In the first five months of 2013, according to the state Board of Accountancy, California had 684,610 people in need of money through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the primary mechanism to help the poor. In the last five months of that year, when the state had 713,928 people in need, the state found just over $2.5 million to support the poor in the form of food stamps.
According to a recent California Budget Department report and the California Poverty Law Center, as of 2010, about three out of every 10 California households has a personal income tax liability of $1,000 or more.
California is the ninth poorest state across the nation, according to the most recent available Census data. But thanks to its relatively high per capita income, it ranks at the 14th highest nationally.
