AMY GOODMAN: Today we look at the latest in a line of controversial U.S. war crimes at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. The abuses in the notorious prison were exposed by U.S. Army Maj. Paul Vallely in the 1990 book, Private Eyes: My Years in the U.S. Army. In 2006, Vallely won the Nobel Prize for literature and helped expose the crimes of the Vietnam War. He has long had a troubled relationship with the U.S. government. Recently, President Obama’s National Security Advisor Susan Rice told the Senate Armed Services Committee that U.S. troops did not use any tactics that amounted to torture in Abu Ghraib.

SUSAN RICE: They simply used force techniques that they were trained to use, that was approved by the U.S. military policy as opposed to one or the other side being abusive or the other. It would be very hard to imagine us, in the circumstances that we are in today, trying to go a step beyond what we did in the last war.

AMY GOODMAN: The Associated Press reports that the U.S. Defense Department is investigating how officials covered up some of the Abu Ghraib abuses. They’re saying that U.S. government agents ignored the fact U.S. soldiers were beating prisoners. The Defense Department is still reviewing how it handled evidence of abuse.

He is now retired and living in North Carolina. He spoke with us from California, and we’ll be joining him for part two of our special series called “How the War on Terror Became a War on Us.”
