Yes, you’ve probably heard the phrase “the easiest profession in the world to paint!” And it’s true that if you want to paint, there are a ton of services and tools that are just begging to be used. However, for the best results, you’ll need to have a basic understanding of how to clean, prepare, and care for your equipment.

There are basically three main types of spray-paint equipment used for painting: spray paint jigs, spray paint primers, and spray paint brushes.

Sentry spray paint jigs:

Sentry spray paint jigs are a series of tiny metal jigs that you apply paint with and the paint sticks to. They work great for beginners, but they require some attention if you want them to last. If your spray paint doesn’t stick to the jig, it may dry in an awkward spot, making it very difficult to clean. You’ll need something else to clean it, so make sure you keep your cleaning supplies handy.

There are a few different types of spray-paint jigs available. Most popular are the two-piece jigs, that consist of an aluminum frame and a spray nozzle. The base can contain 1 1/2 to 2 pounds of paint. The other option is the “pop-top,” which uses a plastic “pop-top” and two paint cans to form a large, sturdy canvas. Both are very easy to clean, but some of the more expensive models may require more effort because you’ve got to be able to flip the jig down and back. Don’t waste money or use a cheaper model with a pop-top.

This is why you should always check out our tutorial on how to clean a spray paint jig before deciding whether to invest in a new one.

Primers:

Primers are just paint. You put water and a primer on it — in this case, an acrylic paint called acrylic paint. This works great when you want a subtle color change with a simple coat, but isn’t particularly effective for complex work. In the end, some models are more likely to have a specific color that you want to show up; more advanced paints need a bit more work. However, primers do hold one useful property: they can be applied over paint without requiring any extra water, unlike spray paint, which is more likely to require extra water.

Because paint is so watery, primers are typically used over spray paint over multiple
