If you live in London, donít put any tags on public buildings like shops and businesses. These are legal, youíre welcome to put a sticker wherever you like, but be aware you could be charged with criminal damage, assault or vandalism.

Burglary, theft and graffiti are unlawful and if you have ever been a victim of these crimes, itís your responsibility.

Why are there graffiti tags?

Graffiti is something we like to do. The most popular graffiti tags are those that symbolise the name of a person or place, like ‘George III’, but you could also use them as symbols of love to express your appreciation for a significant personís efforts, a symbol of the time in which it was drawn, or whatever you believe. Graffiti is always welcomed and has been a part of our graffiti culture for many years.

Where has vandalising been an issue?

Over the past few years, there has been a massive rise in graffiti vandalism. Our graffiti culture is rooted in the community that we live in: the creative people with the ability to paint the London skyline and make other people proud of the city. This community has created a unique space where each other can learn from each other, make their mark in the world and share it with each other.

In 2010 the City of London Council launched Operation Stinger. This innovative operation, which saw the largest number of police officers in the police area on their frontline in several decades, involved the identification of graffiti perpetrators and bringing more of the perpetrators to justice. Operation Stinger, and the resulting reduction in graffiti vandalism was seen as a significant achievement by the London Police, and a welcome success for the London community.

The City of London Police are keen to tackle graffiti vandalism and are determined to make all communities proud of the London we proudly call home. This includes protecting graffiti artists and graffiti heritage to the best of their ability as well as the public space they take as their own.
