The problem with talking about calorie burn is that many people believe that if they exercise enough, they’ll burn calories with every walk or jog or run that they do. But it’s actually much more complicated than that.

How Much Calories Do They Burn?

When you walk or jog for a couple of minutes, your body releases a number of hormones into your bloodstream that cause you to burn energy. A great example: when you run, your muscles use oxygen, and that oxygen is broken down into carbon dioxide. When you eat, muscles can use glucose to power muscle contraction. But you also burn calories through the release of hormones called leptin and insulin.

When you run, your heart pumps blood over the muscles, and that blood becomes stored as well. And when you jump rope, your body uses muscles to push the rope, causing the rope to vibrate. And because this causes the rope to make more contact with the floor than it would otherwise, the muscles vibrate more. Because this creates more force, your heart pumps faster, and that fast heart rate increases your blood flow.

If you look at the above, you will see the muscle contractions also release some blood, but the muscle contractions also have something in common with your normal activity: they cause a lot of fat cells to be released into the bloodstream. When you jump rope, the result is the same thing: a lot of fat cells are released into the bloodstream. Both of these actions increase your blood flow, and this increases the speed at which the blood is traveling to the muscles…which allows the muscles to work overtime.

The same can be said for weight lifting. When you lift weights, your body produces glucose, and that glucose is broken down into the energy that you need to work out (remember, the muscles are still contracting and using oxygen for the same reason you would if you’d just jogged).

The energy produced from the breakdown of muscle glycogen and fat cells is also what allows you to train in the weight room so often. You have a constant flow of calories out of your body, so if that steady flow of energy stops, so does your workout.
