What exercise burns the most calories? – Webmd Diet

The answer is… well, it depends. What works best for you depends on your fitness goals, your lifestyle, and the exercise you’re undertaking.

Most people who are interested in losing weight will need to cut back on calories to lose more weight. It’s possible to lose up to 10 percent of your weight if you cut about 150 calories a day, and those who are not overweight can cut 200 calories a day, which is about the amount you need to lose, according to a recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine.

Some people want to lose weight without cutting calories, said Dr. Peter S. Baumbach, a professor of exercise physiology and human performance at the University of Arizona who studies weight loss, particularly weight loss during exercise. He said a few common ways to lose weight without burning more calories are to avoid eating out or exercising for more than 30 minutes at a time.

The study published in Journal of the American Medical Association looked at how many calories people ate over the course of 20 days while walking in a treadmill at a level of 25 percent of maximum heart rate (max heart rate = your maximum heart rate – your maximum heart rate within your age, height, weight, and gender, without your body fat). The researchers found the walking at that level resulted in weight loss of 4.1 pounds after 20 days of dieting.

The Walking for 10 Days study was designed as a randomized controlled crossover trial, meaning you ate the same amount of food every single day, but the researchers didn’t know in advance which food you’d be eating. So, they divided up people, and those who walked more than 25 percent of the time lost an average of 3.6 pounds compared with 2.1 pounds for those who walked less than 10 percent of the time. The average weight change was also 3.3 pounds, but the difference was larger in the men than in the women.

“It’s actually a small study, but maybe we can give it a chance,” Baumbach said.

Some have asked Baumbach where he gets his ideas about how to lose weight. The professor is skeptical, pointing out that there aren’t any studies that show how to lose weight on a daily basis.

“There are lots of people who have figured out the diet they’ve adopted,” Baumbach said. “There are many people who’ve started doing a number of different things. It sounds great to me, but it doesn’t seem
